In Memory of Sweep 1988- 1996

Animal rescue fund launched

An animal charity in memory of a much loved pet is being launched in Sunderland tomorrow. Sweepers was formed by Cathy West of Whitburn after the death of Sweep, her border collie. The aim of the charity is to raise £15O.OOO by the year 2OOO to build what would be Sunderland's first animal rescue centre.

The fund-raising gets under way in earnest on Saturday at noon with an auction at Ewesley Road Methodist church hall. Toys, jewelry, furniture and gifts will be among the things on offer. Cathy knows £150.OOO is a huge target. She said "It is a lot of money, but l've been involved in fund-raising before, so I know what can be achieved."

"There is a pressing need for a rescue centre for Sunderland. At present, all animals have to go to South Tyneside or Newcastle."

"lt is written into the constitution of Sweepers that if the target is not reached, all the money will be divided between existing, animal charities. People can be sure their money will be put to good use whatever happens."
